Message from the President of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapy (SPCE-TC)

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the website of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapy (SPCE-TC).

We are living in vibrant and exciting times, with research in stem cells, cell therapy, and regenerative medicine offering revolutionary new paths for the treatment of diseases once deemed incurable. The SPCE-TC was established around 20 years ago with the aim of promoting the development, progress, and dissemination of knowledge and research in stem cells and cell therapy. With the rapid pace of scientific discoveries and the recognition of the transformative potential of technologies and therapies in medicine, the role of SPCE-TC has become increasingly essential and relevant.

Our commitment, as a Scientific Society, is to drive these scientific, technological, and clinical advances through the promotion of cooperation and the creation of synergies among researchers, physicians, the pharmaceutical industry, and all other specialists in these fields. These specialists collaborate in interdisciplinary and translational areas, which include, among others, basic sciences, developmental biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, biomaterials, gene therapy, data sciences, and clinical trials. The SPCE-TC also supports and encourages the training of students and professionals, who are essential to the renewal, dynamism, and growth of the Society.

These networks of collaboration and knowledge sharing are fostered through SPCE-TC’s biennial congresses, the With]Out[Borders workshops, and webcasts. The Society also rewards basic or applied research through the Crioestaminal & SPCE-TC Award for Research in Regenerative Medicine, recognising innovative and significant research in the Society’s areas of expertise. Another key mission of the SPCE-TC is to inform the public about the clinical applications and potential of these innovative scientific and biotechnological approaches based on stem cells and emerging cell and gene therapies. To this end, the SPCE-TC organises and supports science communication initiatives for diverse audiences, including activities within the framework of the International Stem Cell Day, as well as other outreach initiatives requested by schools or other local and national stakeholders.

By promoting collaboration, investing in training, and supporting excellence in basic and applied research, as well as disseminating knowledge to improve literacy and better inform the general public, we make a difference in the national and international scientific landscape.

I invite you to explore more about SPCE-TC through our website and to join us on this exciting journey!

Liliana Bernardino
