Stem and Immune Cells Bioengineering Lab

Group Leader Maria Margarida de Carvalho Negrão Serra

Our current research is driven by the vision of bridging engineering and (stem) cell biology to accelerate the development of next-generation cell therapies. Our team has been developed novel biology-inspired bioprocesses, combining the knowledge of cell/developmental biology with the expertise of bioprocess engineering by combining 3D culture approaches and bioreactor technology to recreate environmental conditions to excel growth/differentiation/maturation of human (stem) cells and cellular products (e.g. extracellular vesicles). The team is also integrating omics methodologies and process analytical tools (PAT) to support bioprocess understanding and development and to provide a more comprehensive characterization of cells’ quality attributes including identity, purity and potency. This knowledge has granted several key collaborations partners from academia and industry as well as clinicians.
